Suggested summer reading for English 1010:

Kindred by Octavia Butler

Everything Matters by Ron Currie, jr.

Wolf in White Van by John Darnielle

1984 by George Orwell

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut

Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? by Jeanette Winterson

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot is only available to those who did not read it already during AP class (or at any other time).

You may choose to read one of the books from the list provided or can email an alternative choice to Mr. Stuart at culler.stuart@chagrinschools.org (This is chagrinSCHOOLS.org—If you email to the wrong address you will be responsible for one of the books on the list.)

When considering an alternative book, note that any book with a movie/television adaptation will not be approved. The book must be of the appropriate grade level in terms of difficulty. The book may not have been read in a previous class and must be a new experience for you this summer.

Annotations for English 1010:

You should read all significant works while wielding a pen/pencil. Annotate topics of interest, important and interesting quotes (and why they are important or interesting), themes that the text explores, literature devices that augment themes, your impressions or trains of thought that the material impacts, and any other item that engages you as a thinker, as a writer, and as a person. Your annotations will be available to you when we write about your book the first quarter. You are not required to have a certain amount of annotations and books will not be collected. The first assessment will measure your level of engagement in the text as well as your writing.
