Chagrin Falls Schools Launches New School Year Theme: “HOME”

HOME themed logoChagrin Falls Exempted Village School District has a new theme and focus this year, “HOME.”  This was introduced at the opening convocation ceremony on August 19 at the new Chagrin Falls Intermediate School.  Superintendent Robert Hunt introduced the theme to the staff with a dramatic presentation summarizing the theme. The event closed as more than 40 teachers, in a flash mob style, joined together in singing the popular pop song, HOME, by Phillips Phillips.

The average student in America has approximately 6,000 waking hours.  They spend 1,000 of those hours in school and 1,340 hours doing homework and participating in extracurricular activities.  Therefore, almost 40% of a student’s waking hours are impacted by teachers, extracurricular supervisors and coaches.  The Chagrin Falls’ staff takes this responsibility very seriously and is passionate about maximizing the potential of each and every student during that time.

Additionally, a simple Google search will lead to the key characteristics parents should instill in their children at home.  They include curiosity, social skills, grit, integrity, resourcefulness, creativity, empathy, assertiveness, humility and confidence.  This is the home environment that is nurturing and fosters successful development.  This is the type of environment that has open communication, avoids negativity and psychologically- toxic events.  This is a home that promotes and teaches social behavior, self regulation and all the skills needed to become productive adults.  It is a home that has limits that are defined and enforced consistently.  Finally, it is a home that has the ability to be mindful of one’s thoughts and feelings and acts from a core value system.

The amount of time we have with young people and knowing what characteristics we should instill in children led to our theme of HOME.  The District continuously strives to create a safe environment providing a culture of acceptance, responsibility and growth.  We want students to feel connected and valued every time they interact with our staff and we strive to be partners with parents in the development of their child. In other words, what develops quality individuals at home are the same things we aspire to develop at school.  We want our school buildings, sports fields, and stages to become an extension of HOME for our students!
