The Gurney Elementary Service Learning Club shared in some Halloween fun with the Hamlet Village residents on October 31. Sixteen third-grade students, dressed in costumes and played Halloween Bingo with the residents.
“During the Bingo game, sometimes the residents helped me with the old fashioned words like - bobbing for apples. I didn’t know what that was and they explained it to me. They said they did that when they were younger,” said third grader Parker Lower. “I joined the Gurney Service Learning Club because I like helping the community and making things better for people.”
“The residents said they were surprised we bought our costumes from the store. They said when they were little that they made their own costumes,” said third grader Vivian Self. “I really liked the Bingo game. I helped them find where the words were on the board.”
Teacher/Club Co-Advisor Courtney Mooney reconnected with her third-grade teacher from Sands Elementary, Mrs. Rice. “She taught me cursive and I loved when she would read aloud,” said Mooney. “Now I get to share my love of reading as a teacher in Chagrin Falls, just like her.” Dale Tschappat, school counselor, is also an advisor of the club.
The students will be visiting Hamlet once a month during the school year. Their next visit will be on November 9. They are planning to do a craft together for Veteran’s Day.
