After an in-depth study of Macbeth in the fall semester, 16 of our English 12 students had the unique opportunity to bring the text to life through a field trip on March 19 to Great Lakes Theater at Playhouse Square for a student matinee performance.

Experiencing Shakespeare’s work live on stage deepened students’ understanding of the play’s themes of ambition, power, and consequence, while bringing the text to life in a meaningful and memorable way. This field trip reflects our commitment to connecting classroom learning with real-world experiences.

Art in action at the Natural History Museum!

Students from Jill Eisert’s art classes took their sketchbooks to the museum for a day of live observation and sketching. Surrounded by inspiring exhibits, they captured details and refined their artistic techniques in a real world setting.

The highlight of the visit was meeting renowned artist Derek Hess and exploring his exhibition. Hearing about his creative process gave students valuable insight into the work behind professional art.

Experiences like this connect classroom learning to the broader creative community and challenge students to grow as artists.

Last week, the CFHS History of Cleveland class welcomed renowned chef and entrepreneur Doug Katz for a special guest talk.

Katz, owner and founder of Zhug, Amba, Kiln, and Provenance at the Cleveland Museum of Art AND a James Beard Award semifinalist shared his journey and reflected on how local restaurants help shape the identity and culture of a city. It is a powerful example of how today’s leaders continue to define Cleveland’s story.

Our biology students are getting up close and personal with some very sleepy Drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies). Why the nap time? It’s much easier to observe genetics when your subjects aren't flying around the room!

Students are sorting the flies and then using microscopes to identify dominant versus recessive traits (like classic red eyes vs. white mutations). It’s hands-on investigation that brings the Ohio biology standards right off the page and into the lab. Great job by our budding geneticists! 🧬🔬

Buoyancy, Balance, and a Bit of Chagrin Innovation! 🌊⚙️

Mrs. Anderson challenged her 9th grade physical science students to achieve neutral buoyancy with custom, 3D-printed scuba divers. 💧Mr. Volk printed each diver in the Innovation Center with a unique weight distribution, so no two were alike. Using hot glue and their knowledge of forces, students experimented with items like beads, hardware, popsicle sticks, and balloons to adjust the net force and achieve neutral buoyancy.

To kick off the lesson, Dr. Penczarski, a certified scuba diver with more than 500 dives, shared insights about buoyancy and equilibrium from her underwater experiences. How do you float above a reef without touching it?

Thoughtful teaching and curious minds came together in this lesson, a reminder that learning can be both meaningful and authentic.
