As part of Kindness Week, Gurney students participated in Mix It Up at Lunch Day. 🧡🖤

Students were randomly assigned a lunch table, creating a simple opportunity to sit with someone new. With the help of our Service Learning Club, the cafeteria looked a little different and felt a little more connected.

Mix It Up at Lunch encourages students to identify, question and cross social boundaries to build bridges across differences and create a welcoming, connected school environment.

Sometimes a small step outside a comfort zone can lead to a new friendship. 💫

Shhh... science in progress! 🤫💤

Our biology students are getting up close and personal with some very sleepy Drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies). Why the nap time? It’s much easier to observe genetics when your subjects aren't flying around the room!

Students are sorting the flies and then using microscopes to identify dominant versus recessive traits (like classic red eyes vs. white mutations). It’s hands-on investigation that brings the Ohio biology standards right off the page and into the lab. Great job by our budding geneticists! 🧬🔬

The Innovation Center turned into the IC Cafe and our 7th and 8th graders were here for it. 📚

Led by Maria Sargiovanni and Christina Cline, students sampled Tiger Perk drinks, entered prize giveaways, and explored 24 high interest titles. They analyzed covers, summaries, and first pages, tracked mood from humorous to intense, and compared graphic novels with traditional prose to see which storytelling style made the biggest impact.

Not just browsing. Real thinking. Real engagement. Real readers. 🧭✨

Inspired by the bold, colorful mug designs of folk artist Heather Galler, Club Connect Jr. students created their own mug artwork during a field trip to Miles Farmers Market in Solon. Flash Food Drive | January 12–15

As we celebrate the retirement of Chris Woofter, we are inviting our school community to honor his 15 years of service to Chagrin Falls Schools with a meaningful act of giving. In addition to serving our district as both a principal and Director of Operations and Human Resources, Chris has long given his personal time to helping others. This food drive reflects that spirit of service.

From January 12–15, all four buildings will be collecting non perishable food items for the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, with a collective goal of 1,500 items.

How to donate:
• Families may send items in with their student
• Donations can also be dropped off at building offices

Some of our sixth grader recently visited Mr. Wise’s first grade class for a special reading of The Rainbow Fish followed by a colorful art project. This experience gave our sixth graders a chance to shine as peer leaders, while our first graders enjoyed learning alongside older students they look up to.

A big thank you to School Counselor Mrs. Schleup for bringing this partnership to life and creating such a meaningful learning moment for everyone involved. 🧡🖤✨

There are some AI tools out there hallucinating snow days. Make sure you remind your students, AI makes mistakes and they should always check a primary source!

At CFMS, recess + chess = recHess!

Thanks to a PTO grant, the energy is high each week as our middle school students gather for a friendly (and sometimes fierce) chess tournament. Students are learning new strategies from peers, building connections, and challenging themselves in a supportive environment.

The Gurney Service Learning Club visited Hamlet Village yesterday and connected generations through service and gratitude. Students heard from Chagrin Falls Air Force veteran Esther McElhinney, who shared her experiences and answered student questions. Residents then joined in to share their own stories of service. Together, they kicked off Wreaths Across America by coloring wreaths and writing heartfelt messages of thanks to local veterans.
